Healthy Pizza Rolls

I am going to take you back a little. Back to a time where snack foods didn't haunt you as you looked into your fridge or pantry. Back at a time when you could eat anything you wanted and didn't worry about it. Take a trip to memory lane...what was some of your favorite snacks as a kid?

Pizza rolls may be one of those snacks! We all love them but know they are not the healthiest snack we can eat. However, here is a way you can enjoy the taste and flavor but have a healthier ingredients.

First preheat your oven to 400. Then dice up the red pepper and onion into very small pieces. You can use an automatic slicer/dicer or you can dice them up yourself.

If you purchased a marinara sauce that already has oregano and basil in it, don't do anything with your sauce. The sauce I have listed on the recipe is more expensive than I expected but I actually came across the one above that had a very low sodium content and was more reasonably priced. It also had oregano and basil in it already. However, if you purchased a marinara sauce that does NOT have those herbs, take one cup of your marinara sauce and put into a small bowl. Then put 1/2 tsp. of basil and 1/2 tsp. of oregano into the marinara sauce and mix to combine. Set this mixture aside.

Next, open and unpack three of the string cheese singles in your pack. I used 365 Light String Cheese Part-Skim Mozzarella. Now, cut each string cheese stick into four equal parts like shown below. Then slice each of those in half lengthwise.

I used liquid egg whites to help the won-ton wrappers stick together but water could be used too! Next, lay out one won-ton wrap on a flat surface. I used All-Natural Nasoya won-ton wraps. Then spread about 1/2 tbsp. of the marinara sauce onto the wrap. Next, pop one slice of the pepperoni on top of the marinara sauce. Then top with one piece of mozzarella cheese, with the flat part down on the pepperoni. Then place about 1/2 tbsp. of the pepper/onion mixture around the mozzarella slice.

Now take the top and bottom corners and fold them on top of each other. Using your egg wash or water, lightly seal the top corner on top to secure. Try as best as you can to keep it tight and compact. Then take the right and left corners, tuck the insides in tightly by securing with the egg wash or water. Lightly tap edges and pinch corners to secure. Repeat this until you have 24 pepperoni filled pizza rolls on a sprayed baking sheet. Lightly spray the tops of the rolls and then dust with oregano, basil, and garlic salt.

Pop them in the oven for about 12-15 minutes. Then remove and let them cool. Here is the recipe:

Healthy Pizza Rolls

Makes 24 rolls (serving size: 1 roll); 37 calories, 3g carbohydrates, 1g fat, 2g protein, 0g fiber, 1g sugar

24 All-Natural Nasoya wonton wraps

1.5 oz. (24 slices) Applegate Natural Uncured Mini Turkey Pepperoni

3- 365 Organic Light Mozzarella string cheese, cut into four equal pieces and then cut in half

1 red bell pepper, finely diced

1/2 onion, finely diced

1 cup of Amy's Light in Sodium Family Marinara Pasta Sauce

Garlic powder

1/4 cup liquid egg whites or water

  1. Preheat oven to 400.
  2. Dice up the pepper and onion and set aside.
  3. If the marinara sauce you chose doesn't have oregano or basil in it, combine 1 cup of marinara sauce with 1/2 tsp. oregano and 1/2 tsp. basil in a small bowl and set aside.
  4. Pour 1/4 cup of liquid egg whites into another small bowl (you may not use all of it). If using actual eggs, seperate yolks and use a whisk to lightly mix the egg whites together.
  5. Lay out one won-ton wrap on a flat surface. Spread 1/2 tsp. marinara onto the wrap's center. Then follow in order with 1 pepperoni, 1/2 mozzarella piece, and 1/2 tbsp. of pepper/onion mixture.
  6. Fold the top and bottom edges of the wrapper into the center, keeping it tight. Using your finger or bottom of a spoon, brush egg or water on edges to secure. Finish rolling up tightly with the right and left edges and secure with egg or water.
  7. Repeat this with the rest of the won-ton wrappers.
  8. Once finished, place all rolls onto a lightly sprayed baking sheet. Dust each roll with oregano, basil, and garlic powder. Bake for about 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Optional: Can serve with marinara sauce.
